Chapter 10

Phaedra rested her head against the marble tiles behind her, the tension in her muscles melting away as she stared through the open archways framing the beauty of the Faerie city of Goldun. They’d arrived a few hours ago, just in time for her to get to bathe in the beautiful, deep pool while watching the sun set.

The chariot they’d taken to Inador had whisked them to Goldun, only stopping twice for them to eat, drink, and stretch their legs. There wasn’t a single enemy in sight, which Phaedra was glad for. She hadn’t learned how to use her powers yet, and even if she had, wasn’t sure how sprouting a tale could help her on dry land.

The gates of Goldun—which were made of thick tree branches wound together—opened for them and Phaedra found herself ushered into the most beautiful place she’d ever seen. The trees were taller than those in Fallada’s forest, and built around them were buildings carved from white stone. Tall pillars and open archways offered her glimpses inside, of the people that inhabited them. Blond heads were like beacons as they flew over the realm, garments in light shades and breezy fabrics a colorful tapestry mixed with Goldun’s vibrant flora. Music seemed to come from everywhere: the wind, the flowers, the rustling of the trees, and the gurgle of rivers and streams. If this was only the Fae realm, Phaedra could hardly imagine what Eyrie must be like. She thought of Sam and smiled. If it was anything as beautiful and serene as this place, her aunt was truly in paradise.

“Amazing, isn’t it?” Jocylene asked from the bench behind her where she sat with Eli. The wheel-less chariot had three rows—Jake and Will took the first, which put Phaedra in the middle next to Arrian. The Elf had been silent through most of the day, his hood pulled up over his head.

Phaedra glanced at Jocylene over her shoulder. “It’s beautiful. I wish Sonia was here, she’d love this.” Thinking of her sister caused her to feel a twinge of loneliness. Without Sonia, Sam, or Charles, there was no one to experience this with. Steeling a glance at Arrian out of the corner of her eye, Phaedra sighed. He certainly couldn’t be called good company. He could hardly be called company at all.

Pushing him from her mind, Phaedra studied her surroundings with interest. When they’d arrived at Osbel Tower, home of the Fae Queen, they were greeted by a group of Faerie servants. The females wore draping gowns in white held up by golden disks at the shoulders. The men wore white tunics and beige pants with gold medallions at their chests. All went barefoot.

Jocylene, Eli, Jake, and Will already had rooms they kept while in Goldun, and new ones had been prepared for Arrian and Phaedra. Phaedra loved her room on sight. Done in shades of blue, teal, and white, it reminded her of the ocean, and her own room at home which was done in similar shades.
